This tradition originated in rugby where players would change clothes between halves to create an effect of “a different team”. White is seen as a neutral color so it works well for most homes, no matter what team they support. From the 2000–01 season, up to the 2005–06 NHL season, all team sweaters were made by The Hockey Company in an NHL-wide deal, and were branded with subsidiary brands. The Koho brand was on dark sweaters and third sweaters, while the CCM brand was on the white sweaters. The Hockey Company began the practice of putting the manufacturer's logo on the back of the sweater, below the neck, rather than on the back of the waist hem, as had previously been the practice. Jofa, another subsidiary, made the sweaters for referees and linesmen until the 2005–06 season, when they were re-branded CCM which they remain as of 2008–09.
In most sports, it is the visiting or road team that must change. Second-choice kits are commonly known as away kits or change kits in British English and as away uniforms in American English. The use of only white shorts to distinguish between home and away teams has been criticised for not providing sufficient distinction between teams that play in similar colours or guernsey designs. In some cases, individual clubs may have informal agreements around what guernsey designs to wear in order to avoid clashes. The AFL's clash uniform policy has also been criticised as an example of Victorian Bias largely due to the fact that Carlton, Collingwood, Richmond and Essendon adhere to the policy less and almost never wear clash jumpers against each other.

That arrangement was reversed in 1970, when teams began wearing white at home. And then it was reversed again in 2003, when teams went back to wearing colors at home, the format that’s still in place today. By wearing grey or another dark color the visiting team was better able to conceal the dirt and grass stains that had accumulated on their uniforms over the course of the series. The home team, having access to laundry facilities, was able to wear clean white uniforms each day, hence the term “home whites”.
The league stepped in and proclaimed the home team had the choice of jersey to wear. The New York Jets, Baltimore, Cincinnati and Tennessee are not hot-weather cities and each team has worn white at home; Oakland wore its whites at night; Arizona also plays indoors and wore white once. But the purple or the gold threads will never be the white uniforms.
Third Sweater Program
Just because a team is playing at home does not mean the team has to wear whites. In some parts of Europe, particularly Spain and Italy, where football is more popular than rugby, white jerseys are worn by both home and away teams regardless of league affiliation or standings . Home teams in some leagues and competitions may also have the option to wear away colours at certain home games, and the away team then has to wear the opposite .
